Four-gas analysis

The risk of explosion linked to carbon monoxide (CO) is a constant concern for occupational health and safety officers in Quebec. Prolonged exposure to this colourless and odourless gas can poison workers. This is why it is so important to have the exhaust systems on your propane-powered forklifts checked during maintenance. The frequency of the checks should be adapted to the age and use of your equipment. It is strongly recommended that complete maintenance be performed (with exhaust gas analysis and adjustment) when you begin closing your doors due to the cold around November and then another time during the winter. The emission analysis report (four gases) will provide the information needed to make adjustments in accordance with the air quality standards required by the CNESST.

The four-gas analysis is conducted by our trained technicians, as follows:

• Warm-up period: the lift truck is used to carry out the usual tasks for 15 minutes.
• Exhaust gas reading: taken with a properly positioned probe inserted as near as possible to the muffler via the exhaust pipe (approximately 20 to 30 centimetres or 8 to 12 inches).
• Adjustments and check of the gases: when the motor is idling, revving, and under hydraulic pressure.
• Analysis report: the exhaust gas concentrations are noted before and after adjusting the lift truck (idling and revving motor) for later consultation during a preventive maintenance program follow-up.

When should you have your equipment inspected?

• Ten years after the manufacturing date and every five years afterwards
• After an incident causing damages that can affect the stability or structural integrity of the lift platform (e.g. electric discharge, shock load, fall arrest, collision, loss of stability)
• At every transfer of ownership
